The Harbour Bell
The bell had rung twice before Maren reached the quay, and by the third she knew the boats were coming in early. Salt hung in the morning like something the sea had exhaled and forgotten to take back.
She counted the hulls as they crossed the bar — four, then five — and felt the old arithmetic of the harbour settle over her: who was home, who was late, and who would be spoken of quietly at the chandlery by noon.
Her father's boat was not among them. That was not yet a fact worth fearing; he fished the far ledges when the weather allowed, and the weather, for once, had allowed everything.
Still, she stayed on the quay until the last hull was made fast, and the gulls had given up on her, and the bell hung silent in its little wooden tower — waiting, as she was, for a reason to speak.
By the time she turned for home the fog had begun its slow argument with the headland, and the town behind her lit its first lamps.

What is Epub Creator Online?
A browser-based studio for self-publishing authors. It converts a Word manuscript into a Kindle-ready EPUB, and includes tools for cover design, a hosted one-page book site, author business cards, and social images and videos.
Can I import a Word document?
Yes. The importer reads .docx files and preserves chapters, headings, bold and italic text, images, numbered and bulleted lists, and scene breaks — then runs a fidelity check that verifies no paragraphs were lost or changed. Pasting directly from Google Docs is also supported.
What does the beta cost?
Nothing. Every tool is unlocked free while Epub Creator Online is in beta — no card, no license. You can browse as a guest; a free account is needed to save to the cloud or export, so your work has somewhere to live.
Where is my manuscript processed?
Import and conversion run in your browser. Your project is sent to cloud storage only when you sign in and choose to save it.
Will the EPUB work on Amazon KDP?
Epub Creator Online exports standards-conformant EPUB 3 with valid XHTML, escaped metadata, and a navigation table of contents — built to upload cleanly to Amazon KDP, Apple Books, Kobo, and other stores.
What will it cost after the beta?
The plan is $149 a year for Standard (the EPUB Creator) and $299 a year for Premium (all six tools) — a one-year license paid once, with no royalties and no per-book fees. Nothing is charged during the beta, and testers will hear well before that changes.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Epub Creator Online runs entirely in your web browser, and your work is saved to your account in the cloud, so you can pick up on any computer.
What is a hosted book page?
You can publish a one-page website for each book — cover, blurb, and a buy link — hosted at a clean address like /p/your-book. Published pages also appear in the public Library.
Can I design a print cover?
Yes. The Cover Creator designs front and back covers, overlays official KDP print templates for correct spine and bleed placement, and exports 300-DPI PNGs suitable for print.
